When you hear the word “idol,” what do you think of? Do you think of a buddha statue? Or some type of wood carving? Or perhaps a mini sculpture or indigenous mask?
And if someone says that most Christians have “idols” – how would you respond? Would you deny it and think that’s far-fetched?
The truth is that an idol is not a statue or something we piece of home decor. Idols are not external objects we place on a shelf or somewhere in our home. Idols are actually internal desires that we seek and pursue.
An idol is anything more important to you than God, and anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God, anything you seek to give you what only God can give… An idol is whatever you look at and say in your heart of hearts: “If I have that, then I’ll feel my life has meaning, then I’ll know I have value, then I’ll feel significant and secure.”
In week 1 of our series, SMASH THE IDOLS, Pastor Ricky Ortiz exposes that we each have idols and casts vision for how we can break free from them.
